Space Shuttle design & construction

If you’ve got 10 minutes to spare you owe it to yourself to watch this video from Rockwell International Space Division. It was published in 1976, so is prior to any actual flights happening. Money shots of the orbiter under construction start around 5 minutes in, but the whole thing is pretty fascinating. The vintage technology visible when they are talking about how cutting edge the navigation systems are is sort of jarring. It is also pretty neat when they start talking about how GPS is going to revolutionize navigation. Crazy to think that now we’ve got devices in our pockets that have more computing power than the space shuttle and are capable of tapping into that GPS system at will.
